Linky-Lous 6/15/10

15 Jun

Some links I’ve collected over the past week that I think are interesting. Hope you like them!

Levi’s, who happen to be one of my favorite (and not to mention most reliable fit-wise for me) jeans brands, is currently hosting a music project called Levi’s® Pioneer Sessions 2010 Revival Recordings.

The project consists of getting current pioneering artists from a range of genres, such as She & Him and Nas, and having them cover classic songs that mean something to them.

The songs are all free (you just need to provide your e-mail address) and are accompanied by behind-the-scenes photos and videos of the artists. It’s all pretty cool and I highly recommend going and cashing in on the free downloads.

I follow the hypnotic blog Olsen’s Anonymous (it’s even in my blog roll over there on the right!) which features, not so surprisingly, picture of the Olsen twins living their fabulous lives. On June 13th, which happened to be the twins 24th birthday coincidentally, the blog posted some pictures of Mary Kate Olsen leaving a cafe in NYC.

What’s interesting about that you say? DO YOU SEE THAT BAG?! That bag is made of awesomeness, it has fangs and claws! I want it. Badly. Who is it by? I can barely sleep I’m so haunted by it awesomeness.

Planning on traveling sometime soon? Maybe just wishing you could travel? Kayak.com’s Explore feature is perfect for those with some wanderlust creeping up on them!

Choose your price range, when you’re thinking about going, which can be as specific as month or vague as Fall 2011 or any time, where you’re flying from and have the option to choose available activities, languages and temperatures and Kayak will make a nifty little map featuring the price a ticket to there will cost.

While the graphic I grabbed only shows this side of the pond, the map includes the whole world! While maybe you won’t be able to leave anytime soon, it sure is fun to tinker with the settings and see how far your money could take you.

The blog Joyful Abode recently posted a scrumptious looking recipe for homemade peppermint patties! I, a hearty enjoyer of York Peppermint Patties, heartily approve of this, especially since these, according to Joyful Abode, are a slightly more healthy version of the those delicious discs of joy.

Craft’s got a really cute tutorial up on how to make a one-shouldered ruffle shirt from your regular old t-shirt. This tutorial may even be just simple enough for me to actually attempt! And look at how adorable it is!

Rarely do easy instructions+sewing= good-looking items, so this is a bit of a tour de force as far as I can see.

Also, you should just check out Craft.com as well as their blog, it’s pretty inspiring and informative if you have any inclination toward DIY. I have lots of inclination, very little actual motivation (what can I say, I’m sort of in a rut at the moment but can’t seem to get myself going). I honestly own so many sewing and craft books and yet do pretty much zero of either. Someday though…I’ll make something handmade and ugly. And won’t tell you about it.

Do you have any good stories or links to share? Maybe an opinion or thought on my links? Fire away in the comments!

Survey Time

21 May

Rimmel asked all the Rimmel 10 girls to fill out a fashion survey for a mini-challenge. They’re going to use the answers to make a quiz other people can take to find out which Rimmel 10 girl they’re most similar to! Just so you can cheat and make sure you get me as your answer (you want me as your outcome, right? RIGHT?) here’s what I said (I know, it’s long, feel free to skim just like you do when reading textbooks for real, grade-affecting quizzes):

  1. Tell us your top 3 London Look “do’s” and “don’ts”

Do:

Wear what you like, in fashion or not.

Layer! I personally love layered looks, and it can instantly chic up a dull outfit.

Have fun with your hair. It will grow back, and you have the rest of your life to look what others might call “respectable.”

Don’t:

Don’t buy clothes you’re not sure about. If you don’t love it when you try it on, you probably won’t love it when you find it again six months from now, unworn, in the back of your closet.

Don’t wear clothes that simply aren’t flattering. Not all clothing or trends will suit your body shape, sad but true. I may love the look of flowy, loose tunics, but they simply don’t suit me and my pear-shaped body. I can belt them and get a cute jacket and make them work if I spend a long time putting together my outfit, but at the end of the day I’d rather just own clothes that I know suit my taste and shape without a half-hour brainstorming session in my closet.

Don’t have panty lines. Seriously, so gross. I don’t even really like thongs, but I’m sure as hell wearing them rather than have panty lines. Also, I hate the word panty, don’t ever make me write it again.

Please don't. Picture courtesy of pacsun.com

  1. Tell us about your worst fashion disaster? We’re talking 10 on the Richter scale here.

When I was 12 years old I suddenly decided green was my favorite color. Of course it wasn’t really, it just seemed like the “cool” color of the moment, I’m sure Seventeen magazine or something convinced me of it. But, since I was 12, I could only afford the stuff from the sales rack from Wet Seal. The green stuff. You can imagine how that turned out. My favorite item at the time was a pair of olive-green bell-bottoms made of some weird polyester material with a stretch band waist. I should mention that I don’t have one green piece of clothing in my wardrobe these days.

  1. If you could get style tips from anyone who would it be and why?

I think Rachel Bilson dresses very cute-casual all the time, and I like Nicole Richie’s style, very urban boho, cool girl. But I also love Rihanna’s style she’s what many would call “fierce,” and she’s doesn’t mind trying out new things. Oh and Michelle Williams, I love her! I would love to steal her clothing (and fit in her clothing).

Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling looking picture perfect. If I remembered where I got this I would give photo credit, but I don't, whoops...

  1. What would you say distinguishes the London style from the styles of the U.S.?

I can only base this on pictures I see of people over there and on my observations from when I studied abroad (though I studied in Dublin, Ireland not London). I think people in Europe generally dress up a bit more than we in the U.S. do, even just for simple outings. While we wear sweats (albeit very cute Victoria’s Secret sweats) to class and to the grocery store, I never saw any non-U.S. students doing that in Ireland.

I also think people in Europe are much more about buying nice, higher quality pieces for their wardrobe that they will wear over and over in different ways, while we may tend to just buy loads of cheap pieces and have giant spring cleanings every year or so. Or at least I do. But I’m trying to be better about that.

  1. How long does it take to do your makeup? “Don’t bother waiting for me” or “I’ll do it on the way in my cell phone reflection.”

I usually don’t take too long, I’d say around ten minutes unless it’s for some kind of event or something where I really want to look super hot. This of course doesn’t include the time I spend on my hair, which can vary wildly depending on how good I’m feeling about my hair/myself that day.

  1. What former trends would you like to see come back? Which do you want to see take a hike?

I really like peter pan collars, luckily I’ve seen them showing up here and there lately. I also love ponchos, though not horse blanket ones so much, though they seem to be what’s called to mind when the word poncho is uttered.

Don't deny it, you like ponchos too!

I’m not terribly fond of acid washed jeans, I think they’re very unflattering. I also think hardly anyone looks good in boxy shaped crop tops or dresses made of thin jersey material (thin jersey clings to all the lumpy and/or sweaty parts of you), so I think for all our sakes we should banish those looks.

  1. Tell us about or show us a photo of you in a style you’d rather forget.

Remember those olive-green bell-bottoms from before? Well I often paired them with this long-sleeved shirt that had dark green sleeves and was striped various shades of dark green and white across the bust. And I would crimp my shoulder length hair into a huge poof of blonde. And I wore super tall platform sneakers. All at the same time.

  1. If you could name a lip gloss what would you call it and what colour would it be?

I would want a very glossy lip gloss with just a teeny bit of sparkle in it, no color, and I would name it Fireworks.

  1. Tell us about or show us one item that defines your look.

My hair typically personifies my style at the moment.

10.Describe you ideal weekend in London. Where would you go? What would you do? Who would you hope to meet? And what would you wear

I would want to go see all the touristy attractions, sorry, I’ve never been to London! I’d go see Big Ben and all the other stuff that all the locals I’m sure are sick and tired of, the London Eye (the giant Ferris wheel) and such.

I’m honestly a bit shy so I’d rather just meet up with friends on such an outing. If I could run into my best friend in this scenario that’d be perfect (and quite a coincidence). But I certainly wouldn’t mind SEEING some celebrities like Kate Moss, or Sienna Miller and see what they were wearing. I don’t think I’d ever go up and bug a celebrity though, I’m fairly certain they wouldn’t appreciate it and I wouldn’t probably have anything much to say except something rather obvious like, “You’re very small in person…”

Jeans? T-shirt? Cross body bag? Jacket? CHECK! I actually didn't like the Guinness though

I would most likely wear my favorite jeans (the dark wash GAP jeans in the curvy cut) and V-neck American Apparel t-shirt, one of my zip-up hoodies (I love my black LAMB one, but it’s starting to get very worn out these days) and a cross body bag for all my regular purse stuff and any extra knickknacks I might pick up. Depending on the weather I might add a scarf and a hat. I’m fairly practical when I’m off being a tourist, though in my opinion I think I look rather pulled together and cute in my very basic outfits like this.

What would your answers be? Do you totally disagree with anything I said?
