J. Crew Crush

J. Crew Fall Lookbook 2010

Whoever makes the J. Crew lookbooks is the DEVIL because they’re tempting me something awful. Seriously, I love every single look in their Fall  2010 Lookbook. And J. Crew is kind of out of my price range. Well, maybe I could buy one shirt or something on clearance, but everything else is pretty much out of my price range. Also, I’d probably need a stylist to help me dress in J. Crew to get the look right, I feel like I’m not very good at putting their pieces together. I guess I need to print out their lookbook as a map or something, but every time I go in there I feel a little boggled and poor. And also stared at by their predominantly older staff. Thus I own no J. Crew. I would like to, oh I would like to, it just hasn’t happened for me.  Anyway…

J Crew Fall 2010 Lookbook

As you can see, the styling in the lookbook is impeccable, not to mention the model’s hair is awesome! I love the pale, pale blonde with the one barely there pastel stripe (you can see it in her bangs in the top picture). I want pastel hair! So badly…but I’m trying to resist right now since my hair is already damaged enough from all the bad I put it through. Hush hair, hush. Go back to sleep, I wasn’t talking about you…yes there, there, tuck behind my ear, there’s a good hair…

Now that is dapper.

J. Crew is also one of the best choices for a modern fitting men’s suits. Sure, most of the suits are in the bridal section of the J. Crew site, but that shouldn’t stop guys from buying a sharp-looking suit from there whether they’re heading down the aisle or just down to the (slightly fancy) office.

Unlike Rent-A-Tux places, who measure men and then seem to plot how to make them look as unattractive as possible for whatever event they’re attending that requires copious picture-taking, J. Crew’s suits don’t billow around the body and legs like sails on a stormy sea. J. Crew suits have a fashion forward slim cut to the jackets, and oh-so-importantly, slim cut pants to match.

J. Crew men's suit pants

Notice the straight cut thigh and tapered leg. That, sir, is flattering. No fattening, hideous pleats here.

Actually, everything J. Crew makes for weddings is adorable and elegant. Especially the brides and bridesmaid dress. Honestly, if anyone is getting married they definitely should check out the wedding section of the Website. Your bridesmaids will thank you.

Note: In no way am I affiliated with J. Crew. This is just my own opinion, they didn’t give me money to gush over them. I wish they did though, because it would still be sincere and then maybe I could actually afford to shop there!

Rihanna, Rihanna. You know I love you, and I love how you happened to change your hair color to the same color I changed mine to last week, but really? That outfit? Why?! You’re so beautiful, why would you do that to yourself? It’s just so mean! Don’t hide your light under a bushel or whatever that phrase is, ya know?

Here’s a look at my new (happens to match Rihanna’s) hair color, just for funsies. My color, cut, styling and the photos are courtesy of my wonderful hairdresser Corinn Orosz from Etch Salon in Scottsdale, AZ.

I would ask if you like it, but if you don’t like it I really don’t want to know about it. Just like Rhianna probably doesn’t want to hear my thoughts on that hideous outfit of hers (sorry RiRi).

BUT, if you’ve seen any awesome new haircuts lately or just want to weigh in on Rhianna’s new color or outfit, fire away! I love looking at and talking about new, cool hair, Rihanna’s or otherwise, so dish ‘em up!

Owlita Earrings

27 May

These earrings are verging on territory my grandma likes to cover (herself in), a.k.a. all things feathery and southwestern-y, but hey, we ARE related. So yeah, I’m so very into these Owlita brand earrings!

They’re really crazy, colorful and… long. But I adore them! They’re produced by a lady named Ashley Doty in a studio in Portland, Oregon (of course) and available online as well as in shops in several states!

They probably look better on girls with long, flowing, bohemian hair (which I do not have as you should well know), but I can’t help but desire them none the less.

Have you stumbled upon any cool new items lately?

Survey Time

21 May

Rimmel asked all the Rimmel 10 girls to fill out a fashion survey for a mini-challenge. They’re going to use the answers to make a quiz other people can take to find out which Rimmel 10 girl they’re most similar to! Just so you can cheat and make sure you get me as your answer (you want me as your outcome, right? RIGHT?) here’s what I said (I know, it’s long, feel free to skim just like you do when reading textbooks for real, grade-affecting quizzes):

  1. Tell us your top 3 London Look “do’s” and “don’ts”

Do:

Wear what you like, in fashion or not.

Layer! I personally love layered looks, and it can instantly chic up a dull outfit.

Have fun with your hair. It will grow back, and you have the rest of your life to look what others might call “respectable.”

Don’t:

Don’t buy clothes you’re not sure about. If you don’t love it when you try it on, you probably won’t love it when you find it again six months from now, unworn, in the back of your closet.

Don’t wear clothes that simply aren’t flattering. Not all clothing or trends will suit your body shape, sad but true. I may love the look of flowy, loose tunics, but they simply don’t suit me and my pear-shaped body. I can belt them and get a cute jacket and make them work if I spend a long time putting together my outfit, but at the end of the day I’d rather just own clothes that I know suit my taste and shape without a half-hour brainstorming session in my closet.

Don’t have panty lines. Seriously, so gross. I don’t even really like thongs, but I’m sure as hell wearing them rather than have panty lines. Also, I hate the word panty, don’t ever make me write it again.

Please don't. Picture courtesy of pacsun.com

  1. Tell us about your worst fashion disaster? We’re talking 10 on the Richter scale here.

When I was 12 years old I suddenly decided green was my favorite color. Of course it wasn’t really, it just seemed like the “cool” color of the moment, I’m sure Seventeen magazine or something convinced me of it. But, since I was 12, I could only afford the stuff from the sales rack from Wet Seal. The green stuff. You can imagine how that turned out. My favorite item at the time was a pair of olive-green bell-bottoms made of some weird polyester material with a stretch band waist. I should mention that I don’t have one green piece of clothing in my wardrobe these days.

  1. If you could get style tips from anyone who would it be and why?

I think Rachel Bilson dresses very cute-casual all the time, and I like Nicole Richie’s style, very urban boho, cool girl. But I also love Rihanna’s style she’s what many would call “fierce,” and she’s doesn’t mind trying out new things. Oh and Michelle Williams, I love her! I would love to steal her clothing (and fit in her clothing).

Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling looking picture perfect. If I remembered where I got this I would give photo credit, but I don't, whoops...

  1. What would you say distinguishes the London style from the styles of the U.S.?

I can only base this on pictures I see of people over there and on my observations from when I studied abroad (though I studied in Dublin, Ireland not London). I think people in Europe generally dress up a bit more than we in the U.S. do, even just for simple outings. While we wear sweats (albeit very cute Victoria’s Secret sweats) to class and to the grocery store, I never saw any non-U.S. students doing that in Ireland.

I also think people in Europe are much more about buying nice, higher quality pieces for their wardrobe that they will wear over and over in different ways, while we may tend to just buy loads of cheap pieces and have giant spring cleanings every year or so. Or at least I do. But I’m trying to be better about that.

  1. How long does it take to do your makeup? “Don’t bother waiting for me” or “I’ll do it on the way in my cell phone reflection.”

I usually don’t take too long, I’d say around ten minutes unless it’s for some kind of event or something where I really want to look super hot. This of course doesn’t include the time I spend on my hair, which can vary wildly depending on how good I’m feeling about my hair/myself that day.

  1. What former trends would you like to see come back? Which do you want to see take a hike?

I really like peter pan collars, luckily I’ve seen them showing up here and there lately. I also love ponchos, though not horse blanket ones so much, though they seem to be what’s called to mind when the word poncho is uttered.

Don't deny it, you like ponchos too!

I’m not terribly fond of acid washed jeans, I think they’re very unflattering. I also think hardly anyone looks good in boxy shaped crop tops or dresses made of thin jersey material (thin jersey clings to all the lumpy and/or sweaty parts of you), so I think for all our sakes we should banish those looks.

  1. Tell us about or show us a photo of you in a style you’d rather forget.

Remember those olive-green bell-bottoms from before? Well I often paired them with this long-sleeved shirt that had dark green sleeves and was striped various shades of dark green and white across the bust. And I would crimp my shoulder length hair into a huge poof of blonde. And I wore super tall platform sneakers. All at the same time.

  1. If you could name a lip gloss what would you call it and what colour would it be?

I would want a very glossy lip gloss with just a teeny bit of sparkle in it, no color, and I would name it Fireworks.

  1. Tell us about or show us one item that defines your look.

My hair typically personifies my style at the moment.

10.Describe you ideal weekend in London. Where would you go? What would you do? Who would you hope to meet? And what would you wear

I would want to go see all the touristy attractions, sorry, I’ve never been to London! I’d go see Big Ben and all the other stuff that all the locals I’m sure are sick and tired of, the London Eye (the giant Ferris wheel) and such.

I’m honestly a bit shy so I’d rather just meet up with friends on such an outing. If I could run into my best friend in this scenario that’d be perfect (and quite a coincidence). But I certainly wouldn’t mind SEEING some celebrities like Kate Moss, or Sienna Miller and see what they were wearing. I don’t think I’d ever go up and bug a celebrity though, I’m fairly certain they wouldn’t appreciate it and I wouldn’t probably have anything much to say except something rather obvious like, “You’re very small in person…”

Jeans? T-shirt? Cross body bag? Jacket? CHECK! I actually didn't like the Guinness though

I would most likely wear my favorite jeans (the dark wash GAP jeans in the curvy cut) and V-neck American Apparel t-shirt, one of my zip-up hoodies (I love my black LAMB one, but it’s starting to get very worn out these days) and a cross body bag for all my regular purse stuff and any extra knickknacks I might pick up. Depending on the weather I might add a scarf and a hat. I’m fairly practical when I’m off being a tourist, though in my opinion I think I look rather pulled together and cute in my very basic outfits like this.

What would your answers be? Do you totally disagree with anything I said?

Looking For London: Phoenix

2 May

It’s a new Rimmel Challenge!

For the third Rimmel 10 Girl challenge Rimmel asked us each to create a guide to “The London Look” in our own towns. You know, fun and funky awesome places. And I have totally got that covered. So, without further ado, the places I think you should visit in Phoenix for a kick-ass time:

  • Frances – An adorable boutique that has everything from brands you recognize like Free People to local artists’ wares. They sell clothing, shoes, cards, jewelry, baby stuff and little novelties. The place could not be more charming. They also typically have a pretty good sales rack, which is good, because stuff this nice doesn’t come cheap. And I am no millionaire. Sadly, I mostly have to stick with buying cute books and cards whenever I visit because of my price range, but since they have such a cute and fun selection of those I still enjoy shopping there. Also, all the clothing and jewelry ogling I get to do is fun as well.

Check out francesvintage.com for more information and to shop online!

  • That’s A Wrap – My favorite place to eat in Phoenix. With a menu full of delicious wrap sandwiches (no surprise there, right?) and names like Ken and Barbie-Que and Gringo Starr and with the option to substitute tofu in every single one of them, I’m in heaven. Also, you get a side with every wrap, I prefer the delicious (though not vegan if that’s your thing) fresh pasta salad side, but they offer fruit, chips and salsa and the daily soup as a side option as well. Don’t forget to get some berry lemonade as well! That alone I think is worth trotting over there for. Oh, and P.S., the people who own That’s A Wrap also own the restaurant Green. Green is a fully vegetarian restaurant that even non-vegs can actually enjoy and look forward to dining at. And they have the same berry lemonade as That’s A Warp. SCORE!

For more information check out Thatsawrapphx.com.

  • Black Carl – Ok, so this isn’t a place to visit, but if you can go out and see local band Black Carl perform you are in for a treat. I saw them for the first time about a month ago after hearing about them now and then whenever local bands were mentioned for a long time now. I’m sorry I didn’t check them out before then because they are great! So great in fact I think my parent’s stole Black Carl’s CD after I loaned it to them to listen to on a short road trip. The lead singer Emma Pew (yeah I know, the band name doesn’t really suggest a girl singer, but it is) is a powerhouse and the music is like a collection of all that is good about soul music, funk and rock all rolled into one. Annnnnd, unlike me who bought their CD after their show, you can download Black Carl’s album FOR FREE. Legally even! Which you should definitely do and then immediately listen to the song “Hussy,” because it is amazing.

Check out Black Carl at myspace.com/iamblackcarl or just download their awesomeness here.

  • The Rhythm Room – This is my favorite place to see a band in all of Phoenix. It’s small enough to make shows pretty intimate, but it’s not so small that it’s ever too crowded or creepy. The sound equipment has always seemed perfectly fine as well, though I’m not a big snob or know it all about those things. The Rhythm Room never becomes a sweaty sauna of unhappiness  during shows either, unlike the venue The Clubhouse. The layout of the Rhythm Room allows you to be right up against the (barely raised) stage during performances too. I’m all for being able to touch my favorite musicians (you know, if I was so creepily inclined). Also, it’s actually a bar, so you can fulfill all your boozy needs and not have to just settle for an overpriced vodka Redbull. I hear they serve food as well, but I’ve never actually got any food there, but supposedly they have good BBQ or something, if you eat meat and happen to be catching a show over there you should probably give it a go. Obviously the huge bands aren’t going to come here, they go to the arenas or the not-very-fun-but-large Marquee venue, but a lot of the bigger indie bands do, making this place a real gem.

Find out more and look at the upcoming shows schedule at rhythmroom.com.

Got any places or things you think I should add to the list? Let me know in the comments!

Also, stay tuned, I should be posting a new look I did with some of the makeup Rimmel sent me with this last challenge in the next few days!

Flying High on the Cute ’60s

12 Apr

I’ve been a fan of the adorable looks of the ’60s for a while, I mean who isn’t a sucker for cat eye makeup? This new video combines my love of that AND the singer Kate Nash, who is always funny, clever and so easy to relate with in her songs. LOVE IT!

Beautiful Crinkly Hair

26 Feb

Cynthia Rowley’s Fall 2010 collection at New York Fashion Week went down the runway featuring some serious texture in the clothing and in the hair. While the collection itself is pretty cool (though I’ll admit I think I’m more keen on the clothing in the Spring 2010 collection ), I’m more interested in the hair.

All the models had very texturized long, low ponytail with bits of crimped and colored extensions weaved in with their natural hair color.

Picture from Hair on the Brain. Click to go to source.

Hair on the Brain, a really great hair-centric blog I follow, has the scoop on the look, go check it out for a step-by-step as well as a step-by-step of DKNY’s collection’s hair as well.

I love how the hair looked on the runway, Cynthia Rowley described this collection as  a “chic monster-girl collection.” This hair seems appropriate to that description as well as actually very wearable since those colored bits are extensions which you could switch in and out if you got the clip-in kind.

Picture from Hair on the Brain. Click to go to source.

I love the idea of crimping the extensions, it’s unusual and really amps up the interest. Just make sure if you try this out you get some REAL hair wefts (you can buy those at Sally’s Beauty Supplies along with clips that you can sew to the ends of the wefts to turn them into clip-in extensions) so that when you crimp the hair it doesn’t melt. Synthetic hair CANNOT be heat-treated, it’s plastic and proves that once the heat is on by shriveling up and burning.

Picture from Hair on the Brain. Click to go to source.

Also, I suggest you do what Wella (the brand responsible for hair at this show) did and dye the extensions yourself for a customized look. They went with really saturated jewel tones for this show, but I think I’d like to do some pretty pastel streaks if I were to give it a go!

Any looks you particularly liked from New York Fashion week on or off the runway? Share ‘em!

10 Trends for 2010

10 Feb

Here is a little look at my Top 10 Trends for 2010 brought to life by Polyvore.com. Before we start, let me say that these are not rules, in fact no one but you should dictate what you will wear this year. Wear whatever speaks to you! And, if you are inspired by any of the trends that play out this year make sure you take them and wear them in your own unique way. Fashion is not about all of us dressing exactly the same, it’s about being inspired and happy in what we’re wearing.

Also, check out the other Rimmel 10-er’s blogs for their own Top 10 Trends for 2010! Yep, this is actually a Rimmel 10 Girls mini-challenge, but don’t worry this isn’t the February challenge, it’s a just a snack before the Feb. challenge. And if you didn’t know/forgot, you can find out more about the Rimmel 10 girls by clicking on the Rimmel 10 icon on the right side of my blog.

Here we go!

1) Pale Lips – Nude or milky pink colors. You’ll notice I included a concealer in the set below, if worst comes to worst you can actually put concealer on your lips for a nude look. It just isn’t as nice looking as lipstick. And it tastes weird.

Click for Item Information

2)  Big Bold Prints – I’m trying to keep all my examples within a reasonable person’s price range so I didn’t include the tie-dye Proenza shirt, but that is a great (and very expensive) example of what I mean. P.S. I Made This has a great D.I.Y. version of the Proenza shirt, take a look!

Click for Item Information

3) Ombre Effect – Clothing, makeup and hair! All are great in ombre, but I’m particularly excited about hair, I love anything new and fun in hair. Though I think most people will go for a much more subtle ombre effect in hair, I LOVE this look on model Abbey Lee from Vogue Australia! Who What Wear did a whole article on ombre hair with loads of celeb pictures this past December if you need some natural looking ombre hair inspiration.

Click for Item Information

4) Pastels and Sheers – Easter egg colors! I love pastels and am so pleased they seem to be creeping back into fashion. I’ll be honest, part of the reason I like pastels is that my ultra-”fair” skin (read: extremely white) is well suited for pastels. But besides that they’re just plain pretty. I think pale colored sheer items are coming back as well, especially soft nude colored sheers.

Click for Item Information

5) Big Florals- I know, you’re thinking that this should be included in big bold prints. But I think it should have its own category because A. Last year “ditsy,” small print florals were in and this is a twist on that and thus should be noted, and, B. I think this is going to be a big trend on it’s own. But we could say this and big bold prints do overlap I guess. Hey, look how cute those glasses are!

Click for Item Information

6) Crop Tops – The bane of normal girls like me’s existence. Luckily, you can just put a tanktop or another shirt underneath it and keep your tummy’s dignity intact while working a cool layered look. Also, not referring to it as “tummy” will help keep your dignity intact as well. This is clearly an homage to ’90s fashion, which has definitely made a comeback. I mean, the whole floral trend, acid wash jeans, and grunge looks are definitely pulling from the ’90s, and all of those are fairly in style right now. I won’t even dignify “harem pants,” commonly known as M.C. Hammer pants, with a mention (besides that one).

Click for Item Information

7) Light colored nails/ Multi-colored nails – Pastels and nudes have been leaking over from clothing to makeup, and I think they will also begin to show up in nail colors. We’ve been bingeing on dark colors recently and I think we’re all ready to lighten up. I also think people are more open to having fun with their nails by doing multi-colors and having variety from nail to nail, it’s cheap and an easy way to change-up looks. I’ve never tried this particular brand of nail polish, but their colors look adorable!

Click for Item Infromation

8)  Braids – Soft, loose side braids and soft milkmaid braids are going to be everywhere this year. If I had more hair I would so be in on this! I love the I’ve-just-rolled-around-in-the-woods-with-some-guy-but-I-still-made-this-premier-on-time look of it.

Click for Picture Info

9) Scalloped Details – Scallops are a very sweet and girly and I love them. I think they will become more prominent this year, detailing hem lines and edges of clothing and accessories. I also love this scalloped skirt, it’s darling and I think a style that will gain some traction this year. Though, since I am of the pear-shaped variety, I won’t be able to wear the skirt since I can tell it would only add volume in an area I’m trying to visually slim. *Sigh* I think I could rock those shorts though! Win!

Click for Item Information

10) Ruffles- But you knew that, right? Ruffles are cool because they can add volume toplaces you need volume or simply call attention to an area and are feminine without being overtly so depending on how you style it. I personally like girly looking ruffles though, thus my overly girly collection of them below. Notice the hat has SCALLOPED looking edges because of the style of ruffle, sweet trend overlapping action!

Click for Item Information

To sum this all up: It’s going to be a PRETTY, girly year. Think ballerinas, my favorite girly go-to look, full of soft colors and ruffles and femininity. I couldn’t be happier.

Bonus predictions: I think stripes and sailor inspired looks might be gaining a little this year as well, which I heartily welcome with open arms. I also hear army jackets (not marching band style military jackets that ruled the fashion world last year, I’m talking about green, Lindsay Weir of “Freaks and Geeks” style jackets) are coming back. Ugh, no me gusta.

Failed Attempts at Facial Hair-- a one man band."Beware the groooooove....groooove" (this will make sense at the end of this post) Click for Source

Let’s listen to a cute ukulele using song! I think it’s a ukulele, I’m not totally sure, but it sounds like one to my untrained ears. Anyway, I like this band– well it’s one guy, but that can still be called a band right?

LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN

Bad Haircut by Failed Attempts at Facial Hair

LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN

Wasn’t that great? It makes me wish I had the least bit of musical talent so I could learn to play the ukulele too. But I don’t.

I went to summer camp when I was 13 or so and “majored” in guitar one week, and after about a day and a half of totally not understanding strumming (seriously, how does that work? I still don’t understand how you get it to sound right when you have to strum up and down and it sounds different depending which direction you’re strumming) and having a difficult time trying to hold strings down to do chords I gave up and spent the entire time just chatting with the other guitar kids while my loaner guitar gently weeped in the corner. By itself.

Look at them go! Such skills, such grace! Click for source

Now on to fashion.

Looking for some inspiration in the fashion department? I’ve got two things you should take a look at!

First and foremost, chictopia.com! This site is great and, most importantly, sooooo inspiring. People upload what they wore and maybe write a little description about it and where each piece of clothing is from (if they can remember). So many people have such great style and the best part is that the majority of the users aren’t in designer clothing. Take that magazines, we can still be chic, stylish and all sorts of awesome without your $4,000 dresses!

This is Ester, one of my fav chictopians. She actually does wear some designer stuff, but I find her totally inspiring. Too bad she rarely posts. Click to go to her profile!

To be honest I’ve only uploaded two outfits (and that was super recently) though I’ve been a member for around a year. I mostly just surf it to look at all the great outfits other people are putting together. I promise you, no matter what your style, you will be inspired.

Keiko

A cute, girly and ORANGE look from Keiko Lynn. Click to see her profile!

There are guys too! And some of them have really great hats, like Adrian. Click to see Adrian's profile!

Also, Chictopia has an interesting feature where it shows you outfits from “people like you”– meaning they have a similar body type and/or coloring. You tell the site those kind of details about yourself when you sign up, don’t worry, they’re not stalking you to find out your body shape or anything.

Intrigued? Wanna join? Use my reference code when you sign up: LANABSTAR999 or, if interested, feel free to check out my not very exciting profile on Chictopia.

My other suggestion for inspiration is the fabulous photographer Gemma Booth’s Website. If you’re at all familiar with the brand Aerie you might know her work, she did beautiful ads for one of their recent campaigns. What I love about Gemma’s stuff is it’s all very magical looking and has such a soft girly quality that I find ultra inspiring.

Mmmm, pastel color scheme, my favorite! Photo by Gemma Booth

This next picture by Gemma has a llama AND a poncho in it! And good Lord do I love ponchos, but I have a soft spot for llamas as well. They’re cute, weird and their name looks a lot like mine. They have a gross spitting habit when they get nervous or angry though, so if you meet one don’t rile them up unless you want the most disgusting, green, stinky stomach acid-y spit on you.

My brother’s childhood best friend was from a family of llama farmers (yeah, I know, what a random thing to be right? But it’s also kind of eccentric-ly awesome) so I was constantly warned about the spitting, I just figure I should pass it on.

"Shit, it's a llama, don't move!" Photo By Gemma Booth

I would also like to recommend you take a look through my links, which are to the right of this post. Not only do I link to the other Rimmel 10 blogs, listed shockingly enough under “Rimmel 10 Blogs,” but under “Blogroll” I link to several good fashion blogs such as Olsens Anonymous, Waitin’ Around 2 Be A Millionaire and Come Over to the Dark Side, We Have Candy (who, by the way, is also on Chictopia and is INCREDIBLY stylish).

Where do you find fashion inspiration? Any Websites, people, or what not I should know about? Also, how much do ukuleles cost? Can I just carry one around and pretend to know how to play it?

P.S. All this talk of llamas reminds me of one of the best movies ever. If you haven’t seen it I think your life is missing an ESSENTIAL piece. Fix that problem right here, right now.
